Doren Kuster Memorial Endowed Scholarship
From childhood on, music was a great love for Doren Kuster - one he enjoyed sharing with others. He sang at school, in church, driving the car, in the shower, at work, for weddings, during parties, in a band, and even with a soul group on a street corner in New Orleans while on vacation. Doren sang to his babies, serenaded his wife, and broke into harmony with family and friends. He also had a deep appreciation for all types of music and musicians. Although professionally Doren made his success in business, his love for music remained strong throughout his life. Just past 50, he helped form an all male choral group at his church and lived out his dream to be the lead singer in a rock cover band. While we can no longer enjoy his beautiful tenor voice and impressive falsetto in person, we are delighted to honor Doren's life by supporting young vocalists and musicians in their training. Keep the music playing, "Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without training." (Confucius)

Tristan M. Novak Memorial Scholarship
The Tristan M. Novak Memorial Scholarship is established to support people who have struggled with mental health that are working on educational goals. The scholarship is a tribute to the determination and strength that Tristan exhibited, when managing his own mental health challenges. It is our hope that this scholarship will empower other students who have faced similar adversity. Tristan brought light, love, and laughter to many people during his life. He was inquisitive and smart, as demonstrated by his consistently high scores on skill tests. He was a hard worker when motivated and could be very focused, if something piqued his interest. Tristan was sociable and made friends easily, in part due to his quick-wit and sense of humor. He was adventurous, willing to take on anyone and try anything. He was not afraid to push boundaries or challenge norms. In his younger years, Tristan was very active, and he developed a lot of interests. By the time he was an adolescent, his mental health symptoms often overshadowed many other aspects of his life. Tragically, he lost his fight and died at the age of seventeen. Tristan was dearly loved throughout his life and his memory will always be treasured.

Vets for Vets Veteran Scholarship
The General Mills Cedar Rapids Vets For Vets Committee started their scholarship support for Kirkwood Veterans in 2016. We saw a gap in the amount of scholarships that were available specifically for Veterans, and we knew that making the transition from military to civilian life was one of the hardest things for Veterans to go through. We knew that any and all financial support for Veterans to help complete their secondary education would be beneficial not only to the Veteran, but also the Veteran's family. Community colleges are affordable and a common place for Veterans to start using their GI Bill/military benefits, so having a partnership with Kirkwood made perfect sense for the Vets for Vets Committee at the General Mills Cedar Rapids plant. We have been fortunate to be able to grow these scholarships; increasing the amount awarded and the number of awards to aid more Veterans with more funds. We look forward to continuing this partnership and helping more Veterans complete their secondary education with less of a financial burden.
